16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Massachusetts o2649
don't want to give people that feeling and ask them to choose. Ask a distinct question with range of
options to pick from like very supported, not supported, etc. Gauge their support and interest in specific
topics. Cover questions by categories like housing and ask four or five questions then look at natural
resources and ask another 3-5 general questions. Level of support is a way to gauge people's
appreciation for what the town currently has or not. Don't get too detailed with the idea being if we get
general support for recreation facilities then we will work with the community to form goals and actions
around recreational facilities. We are looking for a general idea of support for those activities and be
able to form specific goals and actions along with existing conditions which draws out what the town
has and doesn't have. Talk about what the town supports and what it doesn't support to ensure the
actions formulated are in line.
Ms. Waygan is looking forward to the draft for next meeting. She would also like a copy of the
PowerPoint presentation for the packet next time. She asked if Ms. Sweet could provide the
documentation the Friday prior to the Wednesday meeting. She is also looking for the April data from
the workshop in electronic form, data in chart form, maybe an excel copy.
Mr. Hansen stated most surveys he has taken have a demographic section. That is important to
capture when taking a survey. Do they ever weigh the demographic input through a survey? Half the
survey is done by retirees while the other half are divided among other groups. Is there any kind of
wading factor is assessing that?
Ms. Sweet commented there is demographic information at the beginning but it is general. Keep in
mind, they are not statistically significant with no in depth analysis, it is used to understand the people
who are answering, but in this situation we don't want to weigh one population's answers over another.
It's just useful to see who you are hearing from. They do not take more value in a particular answer
because of a certain age group or income group. They don't even ask income questions. Some
examples would be, are you a year round or seasonal resident? How long have you lived here? What
age group are you in? They also don't want to turn people off by asking too personal of questions which
will then lead to not contributing.
Ms. Waygan noted that in the survey she is currently working on the demographic is at the end. If they
don't want to fill it out they aren't turned off right away.
Ms. Sweet continued that it can be done as an online tool as well as paper copies. We do it in a way
where some questions are optional and some are required. Demographic is optional and if it doesn't get
answered the survey results are still valid. It is not the driving force with the information we are looking
for. They are anonymous, there is no value in having people supply a name or email. People are more
comfortable with answering anonymously.
Mr. Balzarini would like to incentivize the survey.
17
