Representatives from
various providers meet to discuss services provided and needs gaps. After the closure of
CCCD, the committee determined the need for food access which was then filled with contract
amendments through St. Vincent de Paul and the Falmouth Service Center to fill those gaps.
There was a goal in 1998 of accessing service related grants and grant monies that were not
heavily sought in the past, likely due to limited capacity in the Department. Ms. Wilson has
received one grant in the past for the benefit of the Substance Use Task Force offered through
the Barnstable County Substance Use Coalition. In FY 2020 the Department rented a film
called "If they had known" as well as for reading materials towards recovery initiative for the
purchasing of books for children whose parents were struggling with substance. Future funding
priorities and funding opportunities that would directly assist struggling residents would be her
priority. There was a goal of expanding the D.A.R.E program, but has not been around since
1999. Education around substance use and prevention remains ongoing including Mashpee
Police Department.
There was a discussion with the committee about childcare and childcare vouchers. Vouchers
are available to qualifying families through a contract that the Human Services Department
maintains with the Child Care Network. Demand continues to grow and the number of
vouchers has not. There was a Head Start program formerly run by CCCD now being run by
YMCA and that program has not been expanded but it was a goal of 1998 to expand that
program.
Ms. Wilson started in 2008 and her primary focus has been on counseling for the uninsured
and underinsured. She currently provides mental health consultation and referrals to service
providers in our area. There was a goal in 1998 that carried over to 2012, to maintain a list of
services and maintain a contract with the VNA geared to providing wellness to seniors at the
Senior Center. There was a goal of establishing a multi -service center that would provide
essential living needs such as food, clothing, and furniture that has never been established,
although there is a thrift store.
There was a goal to have the Department maintain involvement in the suicide prevention. Ms.
Wilson used to serve on that board and she still receives newsletters and updates, but that is
the extent of their involvement at this time. There was a goal to continue education around
suicide prevention and assistance and resources available. There was a goal between 2012
and the present to establish a Hoarding Task Force that would include the Health Agent,
Council on Aging member, Fire Chief, Police Officers, Town Nurse, and the VNA.
