8
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
December 19,2.024
Richard DeSor,Lqr _Ancient Burial„Grounds Restoration,;
Richard DeSorgher, Historical Commission was before the CPC to request additional funds in
the amount of$13,000 to complete the Ancient Burial Grounds Restoration project. To date,
80%of the work is complete. The original budget did contain a contingency however, the tree
work was more expensive due to the condition of the trees and the fencing was higher than
projected. Most of the work involves the fencing to remain consistent with the commercial-
grade black coated aluminum around the existing cemeteries. There is also more work involved
in repairing the damaged stones.
Appreciation was given to Catherine Laurent, Director of Public Work for her assistance acting
as Clerk of the Works for this project. It was noted the official names of the cemeteries;the
Pocknett,Attaquin, and Amos-Avant-Coombs burial grounds were approved by the Select
Board. Photos are available for the Annual Town Report.
It was requested the Historical Commission vote to designate the ancient burial grounds as
historically significant for funding eligibility.
Richard DeSor&Jer-Mashpee Veteran War Monument II
Richard DeSorgher, Historical Commission requested additional CPA funding to complete the
original project initially approved in 2018 with the completion of Phase I in 2023 to construct a
war monument to includes those from Mashpee who served in the wars from the Revolutionary
War to the Vietnam War, a total of 250 names.
Phase II is proposed to construct a Veteran War Monument to include the wars from Operation
Desert Shield to the War in Afghanistan. This includes; Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm,
Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Freedom's Sentinel, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and
Operation New Dawn.
There has been public interest, and it was promised, after the war ended those who served would
not be forgotten. The monument at the Community Park would complete the Town's tribute to
Mashpee veterans and continue to be a visible feature and a source of community pride.
A research team has been appointed as an advisory committee to oversee the project. The group
is comprised of membership from the Historical Commission, the VFW Post#5489, and veteran
members of the Warnpanoag community.
The shape of the granite monument is proposed as a wave with the memorial title to be centered
on plcxiglass with a dry-stone water feature. It is anticipated that 350 veterans from Mashpee
would be listed on the monument with adequate spacing to include any names initially omitted.
