Aug. 20,2001
As you know last spring a few citizens and myself began to
explore the possibility of creating a charter commission. , And we set about
collecting signatures by petition in order to put the question on the town
ballot. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, we had to
put the project on hold. However, I would like to resume the effort to
proceed with the process. Therefore am appearing before you to ask you to
publicly make a statement that you support a charter committee to seek
signatures in order to put the question on the annual election ballot in May
of 2002,asking the voters if they approve of forming a charter commission.
I need a puplic statement from the board of selectmen in order to receive
newspaper coverage and I need publicity to get volunteers who are interested
In the project to contact me.
Currently I submitted 394 signatures and I need a minimum of
1,100 signatures
This is an oppo a time to get a charter, the town of Mashpee
has grown from a population M990 to 13,485 in 2000 an increase of 42%
in ten years, and the town is the process of getting a new ex.secretary It is
necessary to get with the modern times and get a blueprint for governing the
town.
I also have a contact in Boston at the dept. of housing &
community development who is willing to come to Mashpee & give
a free seminar on county charters and their function in town government.
Due to the kooks out there I prefer not to give out my phone
number but I will give my P4 Box 194 Mashpee and perhaps
individuals may leave messages in your office.
Thank you for your time and consideration now give a yes.
Dr. Elizabeth Petti
