Page 4
fringe benefits before the first car gets repaired. Mr. Baker
suggested putting all repair money into an account and in a year
see just how much money was disbursed for repairs. Ms. Greelish
also mentioned that the town only paid $13 ,000 for repairs last
year, she couldn't see how the numbers were adding up. Ed Baker
mentioned that there was no real way to make an opinion because
they did not have a firm set of figures to review. Ms. Rommelmeyer
stated that the town utilizes two vendors exclusively for general
repairs and minor maintenance. Mr. Baker stated that the two funds
should be segregated and that no mechanic should be hired. Ms.
Greelish asked Mr. Taylor about the mechanic in that department?
She inquired as to whether he would have any extra time to do these
other repairs? The answer was no, he has no time for any other
vehicles except those of the DPW. Ms. Greelish stated that she
agreed with Mr. Baker. Continue to use local businesses and then
evaluate the situation at the end of the year. She stated that the
town should be able to see exactly what they need for repairs in a
given year. Mr. Whritenour stated that he did not see any reason
for forming separate accounts, but that the money should be left in
the budgets. Mr. Baker felt that most departments are over
budgeting repairs. Ms. Greelish just couldn't see how the town
would be saving money hiring a mechanic for $25,000 a year, when
the town only spent $13,000 on repairs last year. Mr. Whritenour
stated that this mechanic would also be able to help out in the
DPW. He stated that the department has lost six employees in the
last three years and are understaffed. Nancy Caffyn stated that
the town did need to see a full list. Diane Rommelmeyer stated
that yes, this was only a partial listing. Deirdre said that yes,
they needed to review actual figures before deciding anything.
Everyone in attendance agreed to wait to decide upon anything
before a complete list was reviewed.
ACCOUNTING
I
Tony Gallo is the liaison for this department. He recommended the
amount requested by the department. The amount requested was j
$100, 252 plus $3,600 for a new printer totalling $103,852.
BOARD OF SELECTMEN
Tony Gallo is the liaison for this department. He stated that the
budget looked fine with the exception of the $500 for salary
increase. He did not think this would be right to recommend a
raise for them when other departments were also looking for raises
e.g. tax collectors, assessors. It was the selectmen who suggested
a wage freeze for everyone. There was a question about legal
engineering $155,000. Mr. Whritenour explained that they level
funded this because they did not want to increase it for FY94. He
feels that if they run short, they will need to place an article in
the special town meeting. Dan Goggin asked Mr. Gallo again for the
figure he was recommending.. He stated that he was recommending
$416,407 - $126,515 (vehicle supply and repair) totalling $289 ,892.
