Board of Selectmen
Minutes—Verbatim
October 10, 2000
John Ferguson: . They have not informed at any time, what they want and what they
are desirous of in the Town of Mashpee...there has been some
innuendo as to what they'd like to have, and we the townspeople
have been left in the cold. We just don't know, and you the
Selectmen have been left the same way. When I came back from
Florida, six-months ago, I read the discussion of what was
happening, and I did at that time wrote a letter to the editor and I
said that the Chairman should talk to the Tribal Council...We
ended up with facilitators and we ended up with what seemed like
demands from the Tribal Council for recognition, full recognition.
And I think one of the things we need to do is, we need to have full
disclosure.
A 2000 page document and map...I don't'need to read a book
about reservations, show me a map...of what they have asked
for... Instead of the 800 acres which they originally supposably
claimed... we've heard some thing about 55 square miles, of
55,000 acres. We don't know what that is. We'd like to see it...
If full disclosure is taking place, the Selectmen can sit down and
see that. If you and I as townspeople see that, I think it would
make a big difference.
Applause.
Maureen Rollins: Just a comment with regards to this Bill which before the Senate
and in Washington, has our representatives made an attempt to
discuss the Bill with legislatures? Do we have any leverage?...
That is scary, if the Bill is passed...Where do they come into this?
Selectman Leveille: ....That's why we need lobbyists because they would go to the
Secretary's Office, they would go to Senator Kennedy's Office and
continue to go until their voices are heard.
Maureen Rollins: Is there any information as to where the legislatures would stand
on this?
Selectman Marsters: That is what we need to find out. We need to know where we
stand.
Leslie Greig: I'd just like to make one comment, Chuckie said, What does the
town want from the Tribe? As far as I know, we don't want
anything.
11
