Board of Selectmen
Minutes—Verbatim
October 10, 2000
Applause.
Leslie Greig: One thing that I think might be helpful to the Selectmen and to the
town, we have a lot of voices in the town, and I think any one in
the town can make a phone call to a Congressman or a Senator and
they will listen.
Selectman Green: To answer Les's question, first of all, the map, okay, the map is
available, anyone can get it, its public record at the Smithsonian.
Its public record. It's the original grant. It's the original grant of
Mashpee. It was the grant that was given to the Wampanoag Tribe
forever. That's the map. That's the map. Can I get you a copy?
It's available at the Smithsonian.
Selectman Leveille: You mentioned before, and I consider that to be...because you
gave me an example...and I will try to summarize as quickly as I
can, the map that was presented for...the map that was presented to
the...that was presented for the passage of the recreation of the
Pequots in their land grant in Connecticut was actually different
than what they were, the initial map was different than what they
were finally granted. The original map only requested something
like 800 acres, the final draft of the map, which was like a smoke
filled room deal at the last minute included something like 2000
acres.
So, I am not really interested in a map that is at the Smithsonian. I
am interested in a map that was given to the BIA with the
provision saying, this is what we are planning.
Selectman Green: That map, as far as I know, does not exist. The map that I am
hearing about. The only map that went in. The map that I am
hearing about is the original hand drawn map. It's just a piece of
history. It is a piece of history. It's.50 square miles. Just to clarify
that. It's 50 square miles which covers Forestdale, Waquoit, and
Cotuit.
Selectman Leveille: ...When we do help Mr. Strickland to conduct this forum, I think
that we should be.. make sure that we invite the Selectmen from
Falmouth and Sandwich and a town counsel from Barnstable.
Because, if they think that they not involved in this, they're wrong.
Because, just the impact on the surrounding communities could
12.
