Board of Selectmen
Minutes—Verbatim
October 10, 2000
Selectman Leveille: be tremendous, and if there is a land claim that involves Sandwich
and Falmouth and Barnstable, they should know about this and be
included as well. So we might want to make sure we invite them
to this forum.
Selectman Green: ...To answer his question, his question is what we the Wampanoag
people want of the Town of Mashpee? One thing, is the ability to
remain on their aboriginal homelands. That is the number one
thing the Tribe is looking to achieve. At the rate of development
and the price of a house here in Mashpee, its incredible that
anybody is going to be able to live here pretty soon. Any Tribal
member, because of what the costs are going be, to be able to live
in Mashpee. Without federal recognition, it will make it difficult.
It will make it very difficult for the Tribe to remain on its original
homeland. That is one of the things that they want..
Selectman Leveille: I'm going to take one more speaker and that is it before we talk
amongst ourselves again.
Eleanor Thaxton: I'm Eleanor Thaxton, and I do belong to the Tribe. And, we have
to remember also, that the Selectmen did support them. We have a
letter.of support from the Town of Mashpee in the petition. We've
got to remember that, they did give us a letter of support. I want
that to be known.
Selectman Leveille: Okay...We talked about, what we want to do. We talked about
sending a letter to the Tribal Council first asking for full disclosure
and a documented petition and of the maps. What do you want to
do that?
Selectman Marsters: I will make a motion that we do that.
Selectman Taylor: I'll second that motion.
All in favor: 4-0. Opposed, none. Abstained: Selectman Green.
Motion made by Selectman Marsters to send a letter to the
Tribal Council asking for full disclosure and a complete
documented copy of the petition and of the neaps presented to
the BIA in their request for federal recognition.
Motion seconded by Selectman Taylor.
VOTE: Unanimous. 4-0.
Selectman Green abstained.
.3
