Page 2
Committee would consider this. Ms. Gibbs mentioned that at present
the town votes for the bottom line and money can be moved around.
The fourth item discussed was the joint meeting between the Mashpee
School Committee and the Falmouth School Committee. Ms. Gibbs
indicated that they had met jointly last week and discussed phasing
out students from Falmouth to Mashpee. She explained that Mashpee
had made a verbal agreement two years ago to phase out and not pull
students all at once. She commented that the Mashpee School
Committee has not discussed this as a group and had not made any
final decisions. She explained that they do have petitions signed
by concerned parents that students remain in the Falmouth School
system. Dr. Petti also mentioned that surveys were sent out
regarding ninth and tenth graders and whether or not they should be
brought back. She indicated that most surveys came back stating
that no they should not. There was a question about school choice.
Dr. DeMoura indicated that only Wareham and Chatham have opted for
school choice. Either way it is initially going to hurt Mashpee
financially.
Mr. Goggin asked the status of building plans. Ms. Mills answered
that they have a team working to cut certain things so that the
school will be on budget and be opened on time. Ms. King asked
the figure prior to these cuts. Ms. Mills stated that she believed
that seventh and eighth graders would remain in the high school for
many years and that she believed the school would house six grades.
Mr. Goggin asked the options if the school is not opened by
September of .1996? Ms. Mills answered that Mashpee will school its
children. The ninth graders will remain in the present school
using every available space. Mr. Bacigalupi asked how many years
it would take to fill the high school? Dr. DeMoura stated' that by
the year 2001 or 2002 the high school will be full.
Ms. King asked about the override and mentioned that it might be
a tough sell to the taxpayers. Dr. Petti responded by saying that
she believed if the Finance Committee and the School Committee
worked together and in full support of each other it would not be
a tough sell.
Denise Sullivan asked Bill Jones, prior High School Building
Committee member, to give a synopsis of what he explained to the
Board of Selectmen the previous evening. In his synopsis he
explained that he had two concerns and they were that the present
plans for the high school appeared to be very expensive and more
than the Town needed. Also he explained the plans should be
reviewed again because the overcrowding problem seemed to be
happening at the elementary level. He suggested cutting the high
school costs somewhat and building an elementary school with an
approximate 15 year life to get the Town through this "baby boom" .
He mentioned that there should be a complete review of the
demographics. He felt it would be beneficial to the children to
keep the Middle School a school for middle school aged children
