d
Page 3
have two elementary schools and keep the high school for 10th, llth
and 12th grades. He had also felt this would save the Town money
because a Jr./Sr. high school would cost more to administrate. Mr.
Goggin also agreed that it is important to keep an open mind and
review the demographics. Mr. Jones indicated that Mashpee cannot
afford a dream school.
Dr. DeMoura indicated that the School was following the Town
Planner's demographics. Ms. Mills indicated that the plan is to
get Mashpee's children into a good educational alignment. She
mentioned the reorganization which will begin in september of 1995.
There will be three k-6 schools. She also mentioned that the
School Committee hoped to have two principals under one roof at the
Middle School. This school will house two K-6 grades and the 7th
and Sth graders and possibly the 9th if the high school is late in
opening.
Deirdre Greelish was also at the meeting and has this to say. She
mentioned that she too had done some exercises, shuffling children
from building to building. She mentioned that the Town cannot
. financially or educationally open the high school for 7-9th grades.
She mentioned that the high school will primarily be used for
middle school and the Middle School, with its new addition, will
primarily be used as an elementary school. She also stated that
she did not believe these district lines will remain the same from
year to year. Ms. Greelish had agreed that what Mr. Jones had to
say seemed correct.
Dr. DeMoura explained that the School Committee took the Town
Planner's low and high figures and used a figure somewhere in
between. He also explained it As better to build a high school and
use it as a Middle School than to build an elementary school and
try to use it as a high school or middle school. He also stated
that by the year 2002 , the Town may need to consider building
another elementary school. Ms. Mills mentioned that she felt it
would be beneficial to meet again in September on the same topic.
Bill Jones mentioned that the increases in the tax rate is going to
make an incredible impact for some residents and the impact on
their lifestyles will be great. Mr. Bacigalupi asked when the Town
Planner's numbers begin to flatten? Dr. DeMoura answered by the
year 2020. Mr. Goggin suggested inviting Mr. Fudala to their next
meeting and also mentioned that Marcia King would be working
closely with Dr. DeMoura.
Ms. Greelish suggested that the Finance Committee possibly send out
notice on November 1st, as to the amount each department head can
expect to work with, according to the Financial Plan. Mr.
Bacigalupi disagreed. He felt that the Finance Committee cannot
decide, for example, what the school should receive without knowing
first what the school needs. Marcia King stated that the Finance
Committee took this approach last year and it caused a lot of
problems. The school had told the Town what it felt it needed, and
