i
Page 2
this has been changed. Mr. Goggin stated that the required
spending in the Education Reform Act is $7, 290,000. Dr. DeMoura
responded that excess debt totalled $401 ,000 . Mr. Goggin indicated
that the Town is actually providing more than required by the
Education Reform Act, approximately $25,000. Dr. DeMoura answered
that the chart gives some actual figures and some projections. Dr.
DeMoura indicated he would like to bring it to another level,
because they had made such a special effort to provide actual
numbers. Mr. Goggin asked if Dr. DeMoura's numbers included
benefits and allocations? He responded yes.
Mr. Goggin mentioned that the Finance Committee is currently
working on revisions to the Long Range Plan. He explained that
there is really no change in the methodology. He explained that he
will check with Tom Fudala to make sure that he has seen the actual
figures.
Ms. King asked the School Committee and Dr. DeMoura to come up with
some prediction of a cost of opening the high school . She felt
that with the concerns of all the taxpayers, it would only be fair
to inform them of what was coming. She also stated that it
affected all other departments in Town, as well. Ms. King asked
for this approximate figure by January. The School Committee
agreed that this was very important to all . Ms. King mentioned
. that she was very fearful of an override. Ms. Gibbs stated that
this needed to be discussed at their next meeting. Mr. Goggin
asked if the School Committee felt this issue would be decided?
Ms. Gibbs answered that yes it was their intention to find the
price and inform the taxpayers of the Town. The actual cost of
opening the high school needs to be decided. Ms. Greelish asked
that if it would only be ninth graders being brought back, would it
be possible to house them in the Middle School and put off the
opening of the high school until September 1997? Dr. DeMoura
answered that the target date is September 1996 by the School
Building Committee. If the school is ready, then it has to be
opened or reimbursement can be lost. Ms. King mentioned that only
a portion would be lost not the entirety. Ms. Greelish asked her
question again rewording it. She asked if only the ninth graders
come back is it best for Mashpee to delay the opening? Dr. DeMoura
answered that they were looking at the numbers and decisions would
need to be made.
Ms. King also asked if a decision had been made as to whether or
not sophomores and juniors would be brought back to Mashpee? Ms.
Gibbs explained that this was one of the most difficult decisions,
and would be addressed at their next meeting.
Mr. Bacigalupi asked Dr. DeMoura if next year the schools would
educationally be maxed out? Dr. DeMoura answered saying yes the
• schools would be full , if the Town continues to grow 100 students
per year. if they tried to accommodate ninth graders it would be
well over 300 students possibly 350.
