Board of Selectmen
Minutes 5
June 8, 1998
i
PUBLIC C9N_Vli _N_T: (continued)
Brad Caffyn requested the Board move forward to provide
live cable access to the main meeting room of the Town Hall facility.
The Board agreed, and will consult Media One with respect to this
regard.
APP 1NT NTS AND HEARING
Sheriff DeMello -Proposed Prison Sile Di c io
Sheriff DeMeilo was out of town, and unable to attend the discussion.
Barry Johnson, consultant to the Sheriff's Department was present to discuss
the site selection process for the jail/correctional institute with members of the
Board and interested public. David Flynn, a representative from the Sheriff's
Department was also present.
Mr. Johnson indicated that the present site in Barnstable has been deemed
the most overcrowded institution in all of New England. We are forced to select
an additional site location informed Mr. Johnson who noted that suggested sites
are presently being studied to determine if they are environmentally sound prior
to public comment.
The Military recommended three sites located on the base for consideration
indicated Mr. Johnson. The sites as recommended include; PAVE PAWS,
a site located near the Falmouth gate, and a site located in the area of the
sewerage treatment plant located on the Massachusetts Military Reservation.
It was noted that the PAVE PAWS site location, an area of the Crowell State
Forest has been deemed an area to harbor endangered species. Interference
with air command, and additional costs to construct a separate sewage treatment
plant make this an unfavorable site location.
Selectman Marsters announced that the Community Action Group requested
that an alternate site be reviewed. He expressed concern with respect to
environmental issues, diminished property value and human concern as it relates
to the additional proposed site locations.
