To: Chair and Members of the Board of Selectmen Town of Nlashpee By fax to 508-539-1403 Re: Public Hearing August 24 1998 regarding the transfer and extensions of New Seab liquor licenses: THE MEWS CONFERENCE CENTER This letter is sent in regard to the proposed extension of the liquor license for the Mews Conference Center for the purpose of selling alcohol. As the owner of Condominium#7541, I oppose the extension of the license to sell alcohol at the Mews Conference Center for the following reasons: • Owners of the 80 condos and 92 houses abutting the Mews Conference Center have been given very short notice (less than two weeks) and have received no information about the scope and intent of the plans. Attempts to reach the New Seabury attorney have been unsuccessful. • There is no social or economic benefit to the owners of condos and houses who remain legally and financially responsible for the Mews Conference Center. • The Mews is a community of families,many with small children. The addition of increased alcohol consumption will likely erode the quality of life of the neighborhood. It may also change the character of the conference that will be booked in to the Center. • Additional alcoholic consumption will require increased presence from Mashpee Police. • There is one narrow and winding egress road from the Mews Conference Center. Increased alcohol consumption accelerates the likelihood of auto accidents, especially in the late evening hours. Such potential collisions endanger all residents. 0 Some residents permit the rental of their homes and condos. These rentals accommodate Mews Conference Center attendees. Additional alcohol consumption will increase the likelihood of property damage to homes, condos and common areas. • The Conference Center is already permitted to provide alcohol. Conference participants wanting additional alcohol have several choices. Alcohol is available for purchase at the Marketplace and at Nlashpee Commons. Both are commercial areas with sufficient lighting and liability protection. These are more appropriate,licensed settings for the sale of alcohol. • When we purchased our homes and condos,many of us,myself included,were assured by New Seabury that no alcohol would be sold at the Conference Center. Such assurances were written in to our Purchase and Sale Agreements. 1
