Wal reens continued
Tom O'Hara said in reading the By-Law, it is in violation of the By-Law. George Petersen stated that
one of the discussions in past Planning Board meeting was they discussed looking at the new By-
Laws they didn't want By-Laws to be restrictive of business and technology. Mr. Petersen said that
25 years ago this technology was probably not envisioned. Mr. Petersen said he doesn't think it is
this Committee's position to interpret By-Laws and this is how we look at it. He said the way the By-
Law is written now, he would agree with Tom O'Hara that the way it's written, this is a sign. Mr.
Petersen said you may want to go before the Planning Board because right now there is discussion
going on of ways to dress a building, but that may not help right now. Mr. Megathlin said he doesn't
think it is in their interests to proceed to the Planning Board. Mr. Megathlin said he hopes everyone
heard loud and clear that graphics is new technology. Tom O'Hara said he will bring this up in
reviewing new signage By-Law.
B&L Floor Covering
684 Falmouth Road
Gene Olson appeared and submitted pictures of signs he wanted approved. One is a street sign and
one is a sign on the building wall. The 20 square feet street sign is no problem, but the wail signage
is over 20 square feet and therefore has to go to ZBA for approval. Bob Nelson commented that
small buildings cause problems but he saw no problem if he comes to ZBA. Rich Stevens suggested
he could grant a temporary sign permit since it would take time to appear before ZBA..
Conclusion: Getting temporary sign permit from Building Department and going to ZBA for
approval.
Jos. A. Bank Clothiers
22 Steeple Street
Robert John, Jim Did it Signs
Robert-Thompson-appeared-and-he-said the-eliminated-sign on-the-valance-and cut-back on signage.
Tom O'Hara said the total front signage allowance is 28 square feet and the front signage is just
slightly over the 5% of the front wall. Tom said they did a nice job on the signs. Mr. Thompson said
he will crunch to bring into allowed 5%.
CONCLUSION: Approved with condition to reduce signage to comply with required allowance
measurements.
Picnic Box
30"X40" sign (Dinner time only)
Junichi Sawayanagi
Junichi ("Jimmy") Sawayanagi appeared. Jimmy said he makes Sushi at Picnic Box at night and he
wants to just hang this proposed sign.during his hours of operation. He said at the end of the dinner
evening he:would remove the sign. Rich Stevens commented that.Jimmy has been very
accommodating. Bob Nelson said he sees no problem since he is just covering an existing sign for
part of the day. Tom O'Hara said he doesn't think the By-Law allows this temporary-type sign. Tom
also pointed out to Jimmy that decorative outside lights he is using are not allowed. Jimmy asked
about lights at bottom to highlight the building, Tom O'Hara said "yes", that is all right. Rich Stevens
said he thinks this is just like a menu change sign. George Petersen and Bob Nelson both agreed
with this statement. Jimmy agreed to attach the frame to the building, not leave loose. He will then
slide the sign in during his hours of operation.
CONCLUSION: Approved.
2
