• They have carbon monoxide detectors—one on each floor...one near kitchen/bathroom for the school. • Ms. Almeida said they have a fire extinguisher and asked where should they place it. Sheldon Hamblin said it should be placed where staff can get to it easily. • State requires they do fire drills once a month and keep record. • Emergency numbers are prominently displayed next to the phones. • Alarms checked twice a year. • Child Development comes unannounced every 15 days and they do fire alarm checks. Her day care is connected with an agency called Child Development Corporation; they are on Main Street in Hyannis. • They get referrals from the State. • Ms. Almeida said Child Development Corporation works pretty much like Cape Cod Child Development. • Day care open year-round. Garage is heated and they have AC in window for summer. • Auto garage door openers have been disconnected. • Electric heat in the garage. Charlie pointed out they need a permit for that. Rich Stevens stated that Tom Fudala and Glen Harrington provided written comments since they were unable to attend the meeting...Rich read the comments: Tom Fudala's Comments..."I reviewed the crude sketch plan attached to the Almeida application and it appears that they are proposing to do a day care facility in their garage? That doesn't sound too healthy or appropriate to me, unless they also have plans for a major remodeling to convert it from a garage, provide heat etc. that aren't revealed in the proposal. I would vote no if I was there based on what little info we have." Glen Harrington's Comments... 1. Is the facility licensed by the state Department of early Education & Care? 2. Inspection & sign-off NOT required by BOH for family day cares. _._3._Inspection-&-sign-off-NOT- required-by-BOH-for food-preparation. i 4. Fire Dept can inspect so I recommend that FD make a sufficient inspection. i Rich Stevens asked whether any flammable items were in the day care area. Ms. Almeida said a couple of half curtains that are flame retardant and sheet on the porta-cribs that are flame resistant. Tom O'Hara pointed out that for safety concerns she should have something in the front of the garage doors to prevent a vehicle from jumping or rolling through the garage.doors. Tom O'Hara and George Petersen offered suggestions: parking curb stops; a planter in front of the garage doors; 2 granite posts. The Committee agreed this is a major safety concern. Public Comment Karen Darrah said she is a neighbor whose backyard backs up to the day care back yard. She said she has no objection to the day care but does have 2 questions: 1. Is there a fence protecting the children from wandering from the outside play area? 2. How many day cares are allowed in a small.neighborhood? 2
