Personnel Board's
Minutes of Feburary.8, 1982 F Page 2
SSelectwoman Thomas' states that in the town the size of Mashpee, there isn't one
job description that everybody performs in that job description.- She .further
states that the Fire, Chief would not give a letter a year nor does the Superin-
tendent of Streets or the Police Department She mentions that the Board is _
correc• in holding as it now appears, however, they should rethink the job des-
criptions. The. Executive Secretary goes beyond his job description. Otherwise,
you might be sitting there half 'the day because it is not within a job description.
You are correct- in the way that you 'are calling this one, but Selectwoman Thomas
thinks the job description needs to be rectified as it is improper., Shorthand or
speed writing is just. one skill and there are other skills such as good aecouhting
ability, good •administrative skills, etc.
Chief Gould explains -to -the Board that being the-Chief of the Fire Department and
being solely by4 himself, there. is no possible way that he can work on a budget when
. you have other things to tend to.
Jim Rich replied that what you are saying is that you have an excellent girl and she
is doing a good jab.. He also stated that he felt that everybody exceeds their job
description. He stated that he was quite sure that the Police Department uses their
skills of their Administrative Secretary and the Highway Departments utilizes Helen's
skills.
Chief Gould stated that nobody can write a better letter than Lucy.
Jim Rich replied. that he did not say that. He felt that the Board would hear from
a lot,of people.if they put her in that position without 'meeting the contract re-
quirements. (At this point, Jim asked Chet Garland if he had any comments)
Selectman Garland"-suggested that this Board use a great deal of caution in.examining
this in light of the contracts to see if they may be creating situations by placing
a person who does°not meet the criteria solely. s
Jim Rich replied that that is what he is talking about.
" Selectman Garland suggests _that-thetBoard recognize thefifact that shorthand may not
be necessarily required. He`"suggests that they-think ili ut- a news itle with a new
set of job descriptions. 4
Jim Rich replied thathe felt theonly way'to resolve the situation, as Mr. Woodbury
mentioned, would be to take a course in shorthand_. The town would pay for it if it
is within her line -of work: § . . ,;¢ #, 4 .,eft r.
Selectwoman Thomas replied that it was"up to Lucy.
Caroline Gilligan I asked if she would go to school and get the.skills? The more that
you can get in skills, the better,` off you will be. !
.k a
Lucy Erdman replied that she was jusi: at,the meeting to listen.
Chief Gould asked if the town would pay for the course..`'
• Karen Hale replied that you have to successfully pass it. As long as it -falls within
the scope of her •job, you could take a shorthand or speed writing course.
Curtis Woodbury asked what the difference between .speed writing or shorthand was?
