The next step is to
put a yearbook together. It will be accessible in the High School library, and it will contain
profiles that were already on display in our exhibit. Melania Frye, a senior at Mashpee High
School is doing this as her Senior Project. There is a small grant available from Cape Cod
Five that will fund the printing of the yearbook. The two driving forces behind this legacy
project at the school are retiring this year.
The Committee is seeking two sophomores from the Human Rights Club, or two individuals
who the present representatives feel are qualified. Our current student representatives,
Aimen and Ayesha are graduating this year.
Ayesha Shafi commented they have identified one student representative and are still
seeking a second.
Column
What does DEI mean?
Chair Stevenson sent a copy of the article to members. It describes diversity as being a
person who has a relationship with or is someone from a marginalized community, and this
column is a way for those people to tell their story. Chair would like community members to
write about what DEI means to them, or the group they represent. In our mission statement
we identify race, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age,
religious creed, ancestry, national origin, military or veteran status, marital or family status, or
receipt of public benefits.
The editor is fond of this idea. Marie Younger Blackburn was asked to kick off this initiative by
writing about her son with down syndrome. Chair Stevenson will touch base with Maryann
Murphy, President of the National Organization of Women in Boston, who has agreed to write
on the issues of women. Former member, Hope Hanscom, also a Mashpee resident, has
agreed to write on the topic of economic needs. Lastly, Chair has a contact in the LGBTQ
community she will reach out to.
OLD BUSINESS
Brochure: Next Step
There is a meeting on Thursday morning, Jan. 23rd. The subgroup each took a page from the
brochure to edit. Mr. Klein noted a lot of the contacts and organizations were not current.
Logo Update
2
