We were told these surveyors went out ahead of time
before anyone knew. Gunters Lane is a cul-de-sac with children.
Joe Binette- This plan is right in his backyard. He was completely blindsided in June when he
saw trucks surveying in his neighborhood and dig safe flags in his front yard. This is a
shocking area, given the glacial marines. Many times he has trimmed the bushes on trails, as
it's all maintained by neighbors. You can mountain bike and run or walk and it connects to
other sections down by Peters Pond. The pine trees are massive. Having to cut down those
trees and fill the massive holes in the area, it is mind boggling how much work it would take to
develop that. Beyond all of that, this is their neighborhood. He is on their second dog to walk
these trails. Generations and families are here, some of the oldest and newest members, and
all feeling the same way. It's a sneaky and underhanded operation, do it and do it quick. This
entire Board knew nothing, no explanation, it's all shocking. To add steps to his back porch it
takes him three weeks and signatures. The Town can show up with surveyors and do what
they want.
Irene Checkovich- She has walked those paths, she has walked many Mashpee lands over
30 years, and it's one of the most beautiful parcels with the ravines and hills. From a practical
perspective, how will it be leveled? How can we consider ruining this incredible natural
resource just to fix another natural resource? The Planning Board's current open space and
rec. plan contains a 5-year action plan from 2009 with this area marked. On the Planning
Board website, there is a document from January 2011, Gunters is highlighted and says
existing protected open space. There is a conservation gate at this site, plus two official Town
of Mashpee signs on a metal pole, legitimately installed, one saying Town of Mashpee
Conservation, another reads this area is monitored by camera surveillance per Conservation.
Rumor has it Tom Fudala was adamant this land was protected. This parcel is also noted as
precontact moderately culturally sensitive. Has the Tribe or Historical Commission been
involved? Based on the 2009 open space report, the Town clearly intended to protect this land.
Arden Cadrin- She agrees with the need for this plant, but why the rush to get on October
Town Meeting Warrant, and why was the address not mentioned? We are essentially voting on
something with no address for $25 Million. Why did this proposal jump the phases in the
Wastewater Management Plan? It wasn't even in the plan, now it's going first? She is asking
for assistance in protecting this important parcel of open space. The town intended this to be
protected as requisite open space for a cluster subdivision. Can thatjust be eliminated or
ignored? If the neighbors wanted to come build more houses, would they be allowed to do
that? All open space and recreation plans identify this as protected. The totality of facts say
this is protected. Citing a sewer treatment facility that has been functioning as open space for
30 years, undermines its very purpose of conserving land, and using it for municipal
infrastructure, and is in violation of the public's trust. There are 18 other parcels listed, are all
these neighborhoods at risk? She is asking that the Planning Board research this further.
8
