Mashpee Wakeby Lake Management Committee-Regular Session
October 28,2025

in the area. The committee identified the fallen tree as the primary immediate maintenance
concern.
The committee discussed the significant drop in lake levels and addressed public
questions regarding whether the lake had been intentionally lowered to dry out the pond. It
was clarified that the Town of Mashpee had not undertaken any action to intentionally drain
the lake. Members explained that the low water levels were the result of a substantially
lowered water table caused by prolonged dry weather conditions. While potential water
management options had been discussed by the Town, no actions had been initiated, and
the conditions were attributed to natural causes rather than active intervention.
Public impacts related to the low water levels were also discussed. The committee noted
that two individuals reported damage to their boats due to reduced water depth, including
contact with exposed mortar. Concerns were raised regarding the lack of advance notice or
public alert about the low water conditions and the associated navigational hazards.
Further discussion addressed ongoing issues with the pond, with members noting that
these concerns were more closely related to the fish ladder. The committee indicated that
future consideration may be given to removal or modification of the fish ladder, as such
action could potentially improve overall pond and water management conditions.
NEW BUSINESS
Cluster System
The committee discussed the Cluster System/Question 4 vote at the October Mashpee
Town Meeting. It was noted that the Town conducted a thorough public education e?ort,
ensuring that perspectives from both sides of the issue were made available to the public.
Members stated that the informational session was well run and e?ective, and that all
questions raised by attendees were answered, including those related to the “sandwich
side” of the project and potential impacts on private wells. The committee further noted
that the vote resulted in 1,009 in favor and 315 opposed.
Fall Newsletter
The committee discussed preparation of the Fall Newsletter. Possible newsletter articles
were reviewed, including a condensed Harbormaster’s Report, regatta coverage, a boat
ramp update, lake level information, and updates on alum treatment and the Cluster
System. Barbara Nichols suggested requesting approximately 20 printed copies.
Harbor Master Report
2
