Select Board
April 27,2026
Minutes

Selectwoman Wyman-Colombo-yes
Selectman Weeden-yes
Selectman Cotton-yes
Selectwoman Kelley-Wilson-yes
Review of Request for Town Facility Change of Name from “Senior Center” to “Active Living
Center” – Heidi McLaughlin, COA Director
Heidi McLaughlin speaking on behalf of Senior Center members, board and sta? presented
a proposal to rename the Senior Center to “Active Living Center.” It was stated that the
proposed name better reflects the population served and the mission of the facility.
McLaughlin noted that the term “Senior Center” can carry a stigma and that age-friendly
initiatives across the state are encouraging communities to move away from outdated
language.
It was further explained that the Town received a Senior Center Modernization Grant last
June.
The proposed change was described as a way to reduce stigma and barriers while more
accurately reflecting the programs and services o?ered. Proposed next steps would include
updating signage and printed materials.
Selectman Weeden asked about the anticipated costs associated with replacing signs and
related materials.
McLaughlin responded that the DPW Director is currently obtaining cost estimates and
stated that the expense would be covered through the modernization grant. She added that
any additional overages would be funded through proceeds from the thrift store.
Town Manager Rodney Collins stated that, subject to Board approval, all associated costs
should be covered without direct impact on taxpayers.
Motion made by Selectman Weeden to approve the Town Facility Change of Name from
“Senior Center” to “Active Living Center”
Motion seconded by Selectman Cotton.
Vote: 4-0 Unanimous
6
